Over 500 Arrested During Massive G7 Protest in Switzerland

Approximately 20,000 people gathered on Sunday, June 14, in a large-scale protest against the G7 in Geneva, Switzerland. The demonstration escalated into clashes with police, resulting in 549 arrests.

According to a report from nuevarevolucion.es, the march, initiated under the banner ‘No G7’, highlighted the «deep rejection of capitalism as a system that concentrates wealth in the hands of a few while generating poverty and structural inequality on a global scale».

«Protesters condemned G7 policies that perpetuate unequal global trade, resource exploitation, and armed conflicts, all of which are driving structural poverty affecting billions of workers worldwide,» the publication stated.

«The G7 Summit gathers leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, with guests including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Though it is hosted in France, Geneva became the focal point of mobilizations due to its proximity and international symbolism,» the report added.

It is noted that the organization of the protest was coordinated by the ‘No G7’ coalition, which includes more than 60 associations, unions, and anti-capitalist organizations, successfully rallying over 20,000 participants this time.

From the ‘No G7’ coalition, they criticized the police repression as «completely disproportionate,» accusing law enforcement of exacerbating the disturbances that led to violent actions, including attacks on bank branches and the burning of a Tesla vehicle, among other acts of vandalism.

The G7 Summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17 in the alpine town of Évian, France, with the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump and the host, French President Emmanuel Macron.
