Colombian President Gustavo Petro has accused Ecuador of orchestrating a plan to undermine the upcoming presidential elections in Colombia, scheduled for May 31.

He noted that sources consulted by Radio Nacional de Colombia indicated that the objective would be to stage a false attack against Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, subsequently blaming his government to create a diplomatic crisis and foster instability ahead of the elections.

«It has been reported that they are preparing attacks to sabotage the elections in Colombia, attempting to place the blame on me. We will see if making this accusation public deters them from executing these false attacks,» he wrote in a message shared on the social media platform X.

This accusation arises amidst an investigation into arecent terrorist attack on April 25 in Cajibío, Cauca, where FARC dissidents, led by alias Marlon, killed 21 and injured 57 using explosives against a public transport bus.

According to a report from Radio Nacional de Colombia, based on anonymous Ecuadorian sources, the explosives used by armed groups such as those led by alias ‘Iván Mordisco’ and alias ‘Marlon’ are thought to originate from Ecuador.

Among his allegations, Petro also mentioned former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, suggesting there are political connections related to the ongoing crisis.

«If the explosives used by EMC of (alias) Marlon in Cauca come from Ecuador, it is merely an alliance of drug traffickers trying to ensure their preferred candidates come to power,» he expressed in another message on social media.

Meeting Between Daniel Noboa and Álvaro Uribe

In its report, Radio Nacional de Colombia noted that recent images have surfaced showing ameeting between Daniel Noboa and Álvaro Uribe Vélez, and authorities are currently investigating the topics discussed in this private meeting.

The inquiries are examining whether this engagement aims to influence bilateral relations and the possible introduction of trade measures by Ecuador, including increased tariffs on Colombian products.

Ecuadorian sources consulted by the media revealed that «a scenario is being evaluated concerning its influence on Colombian politics, particularly regarding the presidential elections scheduled for May.»

According to the radio, if these facts are confirmed, they could have a considerable impact on the stability of diplomatic relations between the two countries, raising questions about potential interference in internal processes.
