PPD Senators Withdraw from Agreement with Government, Accusing Minister Quiroz of Bad Faith

The PPD senators who initially reached an agreement with the government—Pedro Araya, Loreto Carvajal, and Ricardo Celis—publicly announced their decision to retract their agreement, alleging that Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz betrayed «the good faith with which we sat down to negotiate.»

«With the reduction of the corporate tax to 22%, the Executive disregarded the agreement we had finalized,» the legislators stated in a declaration made amid growing criticism from other opposition sectors, including members of their own PPD party.

«What we discussed with the Finance Ministry was based on a clear, explicit, and non-negotiable premise: a surcharge of 1.5% on the current tax regime, with a corporate tax rate set at 23%. By lowering it today to 22%, the Executive covertly altered the terms and nullified the signed agreement,» the PPD senators expressed.

«We came to the table in good faith, willing to contribute to improving a project that is detrimental to Chile. We accepted political costs because we prioritized the fiscal interest of the country. The Executive’s response was to change the rules after we had already committed,» the senators insisted.

«We say this unequivocally: we will not endorse this deception. We will not cast our votes in support of a formula that raises less revenue and undermines everything that was discussed,» they emphasized in their statement.

At the time of this report, Minister Quiroz had acknowledged the backlash and announced the withdrawal of the amendment that modified the corporate tax from 23% to 22%.
