The Republican scandal intensifies as the councilor from Lumaco, located in the La Araucanía Region and a member of the far-right party, Yanela Mabel Flores Cárdenas, has been placed under national restriction following her formal charges for theft committed at a mall in Coquimbo during a national meeting of local councilors.

This municipal authority was apprehended by police after being accused of stealing clothing and sunglasses valued at $327,000 from two stores at Mall Vivo Coquimbo, where the National Congress of Councilors of the Chilean Municipalities Association (AChM) was taking place.

The incident occurred during an event that gathered around 800 local officials from across the country, aimed at strengthening municipal council operations and creating a unified agenda across regions. However, this agenda quickly fell to the wayside following the police intervention involving one of the representatives from a party that has made law and order one of its main political platforms.

According to local media reports, including the newspaper El Día, the councilor was initially detained by mall security personnel after being accused of stealing items from Ripley and Sunglass stores. «According to police reports, the procedure began after mall security detained a woman accused of taking various items from these stores. This judicial decision comes amid growing public scrutiny, as she is not just any citizen: Flores is a councilor for Lumaco and a member of the Republican Party, which is currently part of the government coalition and obtained the second-highest votes in the municipal elections of 2024 in her commune. Previously, in 2021, she was elected as an independent on a list linked to the same political party.

The scandal has already generated political fallout for the Republican Party. This is not simply a local official accused of alleged theft; she is a representative of a party known for advocating a tough stance against crime. The contradiction is glaring. While the party continues to position itself as a guarantor of law and order, one of its councilors found herself involved in a police incident during the National Congress of Councilors, branded as a «thief» in a Coquimbo shopping center. An event intended for municipal discussion and regional development has instead turned into a public disgrace.

The investigation will need to clarify the facts and establish possible responsibilities, but the damage to the party’s image is already evident.
