Senator Campillai Opposes Parole for Her Attacker, Patricio Maturana, Emphasizing Ongoing Impunity Issues
On Friday, October 16, just two days before the commemoration of the 7th anniversary of the October 2019 uprising, it was confirmed that former Carabineros officer Patricio Maturana has been granted parole. Maturana, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting and permanently blinding current senator Fabiola Campillai, will be eligible for release.
The day before, Senator Campillai shared a video on her social media, announcing, “This Friday, I will travel to express my objections in court against the parole application submitted by my attacker, the one who has left me blind for life, who has never cooperated with justice and who has never expressed remorse for shooting me and causing irreparable harm to me and my family.”
“This is not an easy situation personally,” the lawmaker added. “However, my stance remains unchanged: those who have committed human rights violations should not receive any penitentiary benefits,” she emphasized.
“We cannot allow the advance of impunity and the passive pardons that are trying to be established in our country,” Senator Campillai asserted. “They want to release my attacker and will continue to make attempts for every convict linked to human rights abuses. We cannot open the door for criminals to be released from prison,” she warned.
“I ask for your support and solidarity. You may not be able to accompany me physically, but you can help by sharing and spreading awareness of what is happening,” the legislator concluded.
According to various national media outlets, Patricio Maturana will be eligible for this benefit starting December 2. It is worth noting that he had already received permission in August to leave for work for 15 hours each day.
We will continue to provide updates.
