In a public statement, the Collective of Argentine students at the Federal University of Latin American Integration in Brazil (Unila) condemned the insults made by their President, Javier Milei, against his Brazilian counterpart, Lula Da Silva, labeling him as «socialist trash» and a «thief» during a Liberal Party convention supporting Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential candidacy.
In response to these incidents, Brazil summoned its ambassador in Buenos Aires, triggering the most severe diplomatic crisis between the two nations in recent years.
The student organization asserted that Milei’s insults «do not represent the Argentine people, nor those of us studying undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees at Unila.»
«We condemn the acts of violence, slander, and defamation issued by President Javier Milei against the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Ignacio ‘Lula’ Da Silva, and the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court, Alexandre De Moraes, during his visit to Brazil. Specifically, we denounce his verbal assaults labeling President Lula a ‘prisoner’ and a ‘thief,’ and the Minister De Moraes as ‘trash,’ expressions that clearly break with the historical diplomacy between our two countries,» stated the Collective.
«We urge the Argentine government to return to the path of dialogue and integration with our brother country, and to uphold respect for the sovereignty and institutions that characterize the tradition of our diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations with our main ally in the region, through the investiture of its head of state and the vice president of the STF,» the statement added.
Contrasts Between Both Countries
In their statement, Argentine students at Unila highlighted that «every insult directed at a neighboring government ultimately affects those who study, work, produce, and export in both countries.»
They reminded President Javier Milei that, while his administration underfunds education, science, and technology in Argentina, Brazilian President Lula Da Silva is opening doors for the youth of the region. Unila stands as a testament to a policy of open borders in education, regional integration, and diplomacy among peoples.
«Unila was proposed in 2007, established on January 12, 2010, under Law No. 12.189/2010, and inaugurated on August 16 of that same year by President Lula Da Silva. It is characterized as a bilingual institution, Portuguese-Spanish, and hosts 50% of international students from various countries in the region,» they emphasized.
«Its fundamental mission is to promote regional integration, build a consciousness and Latin American identity, and foster education, considered essential for the economic, cultural, and social development of our peoples,» they added.
In conclusion, the Collective expressed their «deep respect and solidarity with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luis Ignacio ‘Lula’ Da Silva, a leader with popular support, a historical figure, and a founder of our prestigious institution, Unila.»
«We also reaffirm our commitment to brotherhood between the peoples of Argentina and Brazil, while advocating for diplomacy rooted in unity and Latin American solidarity, based on respect, tolerance for diversity, and the sovereignty of all peoples,» they concluded.
