Original article: Imperialismo estadounidense en Chile: Carmona advierte que embajador Judd “está llevando adelante una provocación” por sus dichos sobre Magallanes
Communist Party President Lautaro Carmona has warned that the U.S. ambassador to Chile, Brandon Judd, is engaged in a provocation regarding his meddlesome remarks on national sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan.
On October 7, the Washington representative in Santiago stated—among other things—that if Chile desires «a country that helps protect its rights over the Strait of Magellan, if you want all those things, then you will also have to work with us on issues that are important to us.»
Carmona characterized Judd’s statements as a interference in Chile’s internal affairs and a clear example of American imperialism.
«These remarks show that we are living through the most dangerous moment for international coexistence, given the boldness and disproportionate nature of the imperialist approach by those leading the United States,» he indicated.
«Never since World War II has the stability of international relations been so at risk, and that is due to the interventionalist, militaristic, and imperialistic policy led by President Donald Trump and his team as representatives of American power,» he warned.
According to the Communist Party president, the U.S. ambassador «knowingly engages in provocation.»
He also claimed that his comments are aggressive and inciting for Argentina, a scenario that could, in his view, favor the imperialist interests of the Trump administration.
«This is to say, it is a very dangerous situation that goes beyond any diplomatic expression,» he stated in interviews with Radio Nuevo Mundo.
The leader referred to a letter drafted by 14 opposition lawmakers addressed to Foreign Minister José Pérez, in which they urged him to «fulfill his constitutional duties» and declare Judd a persona non grata due to his repeated interventions in internal matters, especially his recent comments on the Strait of Magellan and Antarctica.
The letter, signed by deputies Luis Cuello, Nathalie Castillo, Daniela Serrano, Lorena Pizarro, and Boris Barrera of the Communist Party; Nelson Venegas, Juan Santana, and Emilia Nuyado of the Socialist Party; DC’s Patricio Pinilla, Consuelo Veloso, Gael Yeomans, Lorena Fries, and Gonzalo Winter from the Frente Amplio; and Ana María Gazmuri of Acción Humanista, states that the Foreign Minister «seriously compromises the nation’s honor» by allowing the U.S. ambassador to intervene constantly in domestic politics, projecting an image of Chile to the world as «a weak state subordinated to another state.»
In this regard, Carmona emphasized that «a position with maximum political, social, and institutional unity is needed,» while urging not to reopen debates about the powers and limits Chile has over its territory.
