The United States Ambassador to Chile, Brandon Judd, clarified his statements regarding the social unrest of 2019 this Wednesday, following a summons from the Foreign Ministry to provide the information he claimed to possess. The diplomat acknowledged that his country did not investigate the events and that his analysis was based on information generated within Chile.
This summons came after Judd stated in an interview with CNN Chile that US intelligence categorically attributed the popular uprising that began on October 18, 2019, to left-wing organizations.
«In 2019, what our intelligence tells us is categorically that it originated from left-wing or left-ideology organizations,» the Washington representative indicated, who insisted on the existence of «a specific analysis that was conducted.»
In light of these statements, the Foreign Ministry summoned him «to request information regarding the records related to the episodes of violence that occurred on October 18, 2019, and in the days that followed.»
After meeting with Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, Judd acknowledged to the press that his country did not conduct an investigation into those events, thus openly retracting his statements made during the CNN Chile interview.
«The US Embassy has no investigation; we do not have any documents at the Embassy that discuss the unrest in 2019,» he stated.
While explaining the background of that analysis, Judd noted that it was not an inquiry conducted by Washington. «We did not conduct an independent investigation; what we did was review the information coming from Chile,» he specified.
«We have the same information that your police have,» he reiterated, as reported by El Mostrador.
Judd: «We Did Not Send Any Investigators to Chile»
Judd was emphatic in denying that US agencies deployed investigators in the national territory to determine responsibilities for the 2019 events.
«We did not send any investigators to Chile to conduct an investigation, and during my tenure, we will never send any investigators to Chile to conduct an investigation without being invited by the Chilean government to do so. We have not done that before in Chile; we will not do that in Chile,» he asserted.
Regarding the statements made by the US Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy, Sarah Rogers, during her participation in the far-right summit «Foro Madrid» held last week in Santiago where she claimed that “leftist extremists burned the Metro,” Judd indicated that her comments were based on «analysis from her politicians here in Chile, as well as information from your police and your academics.»
According to the ambassador, «based on that information and after review, it was determined that this was indeed perpetrated by left-wing groups.” However, he reiterated that «it was an analysis conducted based on information from your Congress, your academics, and your police.»
After the meeting with Judd, Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna also spoke to the press and indicated that he has made it clear “on several occasions” that ambassadors should not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
