US Defeat at the UN Triggers Washington’s Counteroffensive Against Cuba, According to Analyst Agueda Sáez Fick

In an article published on July 11, 2026, journalist Agueda Sáez Fick warns of a dangerous counteroffensive from the United States against Cuba following a significant defeat at the United Nations General Assembly. The historic vote ended with 136 countries supporting Cuba, only 9 against, and 30 abstentions, as reported by the author.

Sáez Fick notes that in response to this defeat, the US State Department ramped up its rhetoric through an official statement asserting that the administration of President Donald Trump «will continue to use» all tools at its disposal under the guise of national security, issuing a direct warning: “Cuba’s leaders must choose to genuinely commit to real reforms, peace, and prosperity before it is too late.”

The journalist emphasizes that political figures such as the current Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Trump not only dismiss multilateralism but also downplay the significance of the General Assembly while ignoring the overwhelming rejection from the international community. By persisting in this approach, the White House deepens the extraterritoriality of its laws, involving third countries through sanctions and pressures.

In her analysis, Sáez Fick cites Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, who clearly stated that this is not a bilateral conflict, but an international issue that undermines the sovereignty of all nations. The author warns that this new escalation turns the blockade into a total economic war aimed at cutting fuel supplies and sabotaging energy infrastructure, adversely affecting the health, food security, education, and basic services of the Cuban people.

The journalist underscores that Washington is re-emerging with Cold War rhetoric, depicting «communism» as its primary enemy in speeches—displacing the narrative of a «narco-state»—which raises international alarms about the imminent risk of aggression or intervention in the region. Behind this arrogance, she argues, lies an age-old geopolitical ambition to dominate the territory of the largest of the Antilles.

Sáez Fick concludes that, in light of this offensive, the international community cannot remain indifferent. “Defending Cuba is defending peace, the principle of non-intervention, and the inalienable right of every nation to shape its own destiny without imperial tutelage,” she asserts in her article, published from Santiago, Chile.
