On Wednesday, October 14, the third session of the Regional Climate Change Committee (CORECC) was held, chaired by Valparaíso Regional Governor Rodrigo Mundaca, during which the draft proposal for the Regional Climate Change Action Plan (PARCC) was presented and approved.

This plan includes adaptation and mitigation measures to address the effects of climate change, integrating climate considerations into the operations of each institution. It aims to strengthen planning, management, and decision-making within their respective areas of competence and authority, through collaboration among public institutions, municipalities, and civil society.

«It places the focus on combating climate change, the greatest threat facing humanity, which is tied to our heavy dependence on fossil energy sources—gas, oil, and coal. It fundamentally relates to how we have interacted with nature, often trying to impose uniformity upon it,» stated Governor Mundaca.

Water Scarcity

The regional authority also emphasized that the draft plan «centers on mitigation measures concerning water scarcity and biodiversity loss. It will undergo a citizen consultation to gather observations from the public, which will strengthen this draft of the Regional Climate Change Action Plan.»

«This is crucial for our region, as we prepare for climate change. We’ve witnessed what has occurred in recent days, with extremely heavy rainfall completely out of season during spring,» added Mundaca.

He highlighted the importance of having this type of instrument for regional planning.

«Climate change is real, and today regions must adapt their public policies to confront it by developing strategies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen our dependence on fossil energy sources. Above all, they must prioritize the defense of life in all its forms,» he stressed.

The Regional Climate Change Committee (Corecc) in Valparaíso also includes, besides the governor, the Seremi of Environment, who serves as the technical secretary; the Regional Presidential Delegate and Seremis with competencies in climate change; the mayors of the region; higher education institutions and regional study centers; and representatives of social organizations and the community selected through open or public processes.

This committee operates under Law No. 21.455 (Framework Law on Climate Change), specifically to coordinate and draft the Regional Climate Change Action Plan (PARCC).
