Since the beginning of this year, the first year of the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan, Chinese President Xi Jinping has made a series of significant decisions to enhance scientific and technological innovation, accelerating the progress toward high-level technological independence and self-sufficiency.

China’s modernization fundamentally relies on advancements in science and technology. The period of the 15th Five-Year Plan is crucial for building a strong nation in science and technology.

Beginning this year, the first year of the aforementioned plan, President Xi Jinping has put forth a series of key decisions to drive innovation in science and technology, hastening the progress toward achieving high-level technological independence and self-sufficiency.

The first collective study of this year by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China focused on the planning and development of future industries. During this meeting, Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPC, emphasized that the level of technological advancement will largely determine the pace, scale, and depth of development in these industries.

On February 9, during his first inspection visit of the year, Xi Jinping visited the National Innovation Park for Information Technology in Yizhuang, Beijing. While learning about new advancements in information technology, artificial intelligence, and robotics, the Chinese leader noted that the construction of a modern and strong socialist nation primarily depends on scientific and technological independence and empowerment.

Two months later, Xi Jinping chaired the Symposium on Strengthening Basic Research in Shanghai.

On July 8, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference took place at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where Xi Jinping personally presented awards to scientists and technology professionals who have made outstanding contributions.

On July 17, the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference was held in Shanghai. Xi Jinping participated in the opening ceremony and delivered a significant speech outlining China’s proposals for global AI governance. He stated that all countries should adopt a people-centered approach, aiming for the common good, and making AI a major driving force for promoting shared prosperity and ensuring safety for all.
