Original article: La opinión de los artistas urbanos ante el fascismo
The strong political message from national musicians appeals to historical memory and class consciousness.
Following the advancement of José Antonio Kast and Jeannette Jara to the second round of the presidential elections, several urban genre artists have leveraged their digital platforms to make powerful statements aimed at expressing their opinions and engaging in public debate, focusing their criticism on fascism and any connections to Pinochets dictatorship.
The tension generated by the electoral environment in the country quickly spread to the cultural and music spheres, as a significant group of national artists chose to break away from the industrys traditional neutrality to publicly display their political stance, viewing the current situation as a dangerous threat to the nations future and specifically targeting the Republican Party candidate.
One of the most direct statements came from singer Akriila, who tied artistic work to political responsibility: «Art has always been political; it is contradictory to pursue this while aligning with the far-right. Given the current circumstances, its vital to use platforms to inform and challenge those we follow, particularly if they don’t speak about politics,» she stated, concluding firmly: «Never with fascism.» Similarly, Princesa Alba delivered a brief yet impactful message to clarify her stance, asserting to her audience: «On this profile, we are not far-right, and they know it,» she declared.
Rapper Seamoon chose to evoke class consciousness and critical thinking, criticizing the frivolous use of social media over relevant information: «Question your arguments before exposing them and speak from the truth, inform yourself from the heart, not from paralyzing and contradictory fear,» she pointed out, adding: «We are working-class, bb, don’t forget it.» Meanwhile, EASYKID focused on the historical aspect of the far-right, stating: «I would personally never vote for Pinochet supporters, that’s a fact. Be safe out there ganggg.«
Musician AQUA VS emphasized rejecting the idea of individual economic motivation outweighing social good: «I look at my past history, and its impossible not to think about my neighborhood and my family. Dont have such short memory!» This message was supported by artist Nickla12, who highlighted the consequences of voting for the conservative candidate: «If Kast wins, we will go backwards.»
One of the most impactful messages came from Young Cister, who referred to his origins, family, and neighbors in defense of social rights: «I say NO to fascism. I call on my artist friends to raise their voices,» he stated. However, the post was deleted from his platforms hours later, which did not prevent its words from going viral across media and social networks.
The debate also included Pablo Chill-E’s voice, who, although not directly mentioning any candidates in the runoff, criticized the lack of civic education and ignorance among voters. It is worth noting that for the elections on Sunday, November 16, the singer posted on his social networks: «If Kaiser makes it to the second round, in a few years Im going to run for president; I realize that any idiot can do it, Im also a YouTuber and talk nonsense on my channel,» aiming to raise awareness about the questionable public figures from the far-right seeking to govern.
The music scene highlights the deep social and political divide that runs through Chile, using their digital platforms as new arenas for ideological positioning in the run-up to the presidential race.
