Boric Celebrates Lula’s Victory as Bachelet Emphasizes Politics’ Duty to Serve the People
Former Chilean Presidents Michelle Bachelet and Gabriel Boric commented on the recent triumph of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was re-elected during Sunday’s runoff election.
The candidate from the Workers’ Party (PT) was officially declared winner of the elections by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), securing 51.78% of valid votes, compared to 48.22% for far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.
Following the revelation of results, former President Gabriel Boric praised the progressive leader, acknowledged his campaign efforts, and shared his celebration of the victory through a message on social media platform X.
«What a great joy the Brazilian people have given us! Thank you, dear old friend, for never ceasing to fight, for sustaining the hope of a better world,» he stated.
He also recognized the re-elected president’s commitment to humanity, conveying his affection, and concluded that hope remains strong.
«Thank you, President Lula, for your commitment to humanity. We love you! With hope unbroken…,» expressed the former leader.
Former President Michelle Bachelet also congratulated Lula da Silva, who will now serve a fourth term and second consecutive term.
“I want to congratulate President @lulaoficial on his victory in the Brazilian elections,” she wrote in a message published on her Instagram account.
Bachelet emphasized the shared vision with the Brazilian leader regarding the role of politics and its impact on the living conditions and rights of citizens.
“We have shared for many years the conviction that politics must be at the service of the people, their rights, and a better life for all,” she expressed.
Additionally, she wished him success in the new presidential term commencing on January 5 and highlighted the importance of Brazil for Latin America.
“Brazil plays a fundamental role in our region, and I am sure that its experience and commitment will continue to strengthen democracy, dialogue, and cooperation among our countries,” affirmed the former president.
After being declared winner of the runoff, Lula committed to making «the best mandate in the history of this country» and assured that «as we win elections, we no longer have adversaries.»
«I now must govern for 215 million Brazilians,» he emphasized.
In his speech, he highlighted the importance of the vote as a tool to preserve institutions and ensure the continuity of democracy.
«We convinced the people that voting was extremely important to safeguard democracy in Brazil,» he suggested.
Continuing what he stated during the election campaign, Lula reaffirmed that he would defend Brazil’s sovereignty and autonomy, asserting that under his administration, the South American giant will not accept being «the backyard of anyone.»
For the progressive leader, the Latin American giant should aim to occupy a central place on the international stage and reiterated that environmental policies will be an essential part of his new administration.
«We want to be a central country, not peripheral,» he declared.
