Acclaimed Play ‘Yeguas Sueltas’ Returns to Santiago with 4 Performances Before Touring Spain and Poland

After its premiere at Matucana 100 in 2023 and a notable national and international journey, the play Yeguas Sueltas is making its comeback to Santiago with 4 exclusive performances, from Thursday, November 5 to Sunday, November 8, at Teatro SIDARTE.

These shows will mark its farewell from national stages in 2026 before embarking on a new tour through Spain and Poland.

The play takes us back to the 1970s, reconstructing the story of a group of homeless individuals who lived in Plaza de Armas in Santiago. In 1973, during the final months of the Unidad Popular and before the military coup, they organized to publicly protest against police violence they faced daily, demanding respect for their identities and the right to live freely.

Created from historical research and with the consent of the three surviving members of that protest, Yeguas Sueltas weaves together theater, archival material, music, and popular culture to recover a crucial event in the political history of sexual dissent in Chile.

Far from a nostalgic perspective, the staging confronts those memories with a present where violence, discrimination, and struggles for rights remain ongoing.

The play is part of Memorias Invertidas, a trilogy by Teatro SUR that also includes Edmundo and Pecado Nefando, a theatrical project exploring the historical memories of sexual dissent and its place in the social and political history of the country.

For Ernesto Orellana, playwright and director of the company, presenting the play at the theater of the Chilean Actors’ Union holds special political and cultural significance.

«Sharing Yeguas Sueltas at the Theater of the Chilean Actors’ Union is a way to reclaim our right to cultural diversity and recognize the historical, artistic, and political contributions of non-normative sexual identities to our society. We especially want to celebrate the increasing presence of trans actors in the performing arts sector,» said Orellana.

«This is not just about representation; it’s also about labor rights, access to work, and professional recognition. With these four performances, we bid farewell to Santiago for 2026 and begin our second international tour, bringing these dissenting memories to new audiences and territories,» the director added.

Spain and Poland

Following its season at Teatro SIDARTE, Yeguas Sueltas will travel to Barcelona to perform on November 21 and 22 at Teatro Tantarantana as part of the Barcelona OFF Festival, and then to Krakow, Poland, where it will participate in the International Theater Festival Divina Comedia on November 28 and 29.

With an irreverent, popular, and deeply political staging, Yeguas Sueltas invites audiences to reconnect with a story that remained outside official narratives for decades but now re-engages the country through theater.
