The Bank Credit Survey for the second quarter of 2026 reveals a more selective financial landscape. Banks have tightened their conditions for consumer loans and large corporations, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) begin to show signs of recovery in financing demand.

The Chilean banking system continues to proceed with caution in credit issuance. This is reflected in the Bank Credit Survey for the second quarter of 2026, published by the Central Bank of Chile, which indicates a tightening of financing conditions for consumers and large companies, alongside a perceived decline in demand within both sectors.

In contrast, SMEs, real estate firms, and the construction sector are experiencing renewed interest in accessing financing, primarily driven by increased working capital needs and a slight revival of their activities.

Consumer Credit: Increased Restrictions and Lower Interest in Borrowing

One of the key findings in the report is the deterioration observed in the consumer credit market.

18% of banks reported tightening their standards for issuing such loans during the second quarter, while only 9% stated they had relaxed their conditions.

Additionally, there is a weakening in demand. The proportion of financial institutions noticing a decrease in consumer loan applications doubled from the previous quarter, rising from 18% to 36%, while only 9% reported an increase.

This trend indicates that both banks and consumers are adopting a more cautious approach to borrowing in a context still rife with economic uncertainty.

Mortgage Loans Remain Stable

The mortgage market displayed a relatively stable picture.

90% of banking entities indicated that they did not change their conditions for granting loans intended for home purchases.

Regarding demand, the situation appears more balanced. 30% of banks observed an increase in housing finance applications, while 20% recorded a decrease.

These figures suggest that the residential real estate market continues to demonstrate some resilience despite the more restrictive financial context.

Large Companies Face Increased Requirements

Large corporations continue to be one of the segments most affected by the banking system’s caution.

During the second quarter, 15% of banks tightened their standards for granting loans to large companies, while only 8% reported more favorable conditions.

Demand is also continuing to weaken.

Although the percentage of banks noting a decline in applications dropped from 46% to 38%, none of the entities reported an increase in credit demand from this segment.

According to the institutions surveyed, the primary reason for this is the persistence of lower investment expectations, which has reduced corporate financing needs.

SMEs Show Signs of Recovery

The outlook changes significantly for small and medium-sized enterprises.

20% of banks reported having relaxed their credit standards for SMEs, while only 10% indicated greater restrictions.

Demand has also seen considerable improvement.

The perception of lower demand fell from 40% to just 10%, while the share of banks that observed a strengthening rose to 20%.

According to financial entities, this increased dynamism is primarily due to working capital needs, which could indicate a gradual reactivation of business activity.

Real Estate and Construction Sectors Regain Momentum

The study also identifies an improvement in access to financing for the real estate and construction sectors.

The terms of loan offerings have become slightly more favorable compared to the previous quarter.

Concurrently, demand has shown significant advances.

In real estate companies, the proportion of banks reporting an increase in loan applications jumped from 22% to 33%, while those observing a decrease dropped from 22% to 11%.

In the construction sector, 30% of institutions perceived a strengthening in credit demand, confirming a gradual recovery in interest for financing new projects.

A Financial System That Continues to Favor Caution

The survey results show that the Chilean banking system continues to manage risk prudently.

While households and large companies face stricter access to credit and a reduced willingness to borrow, SMEs and certain productive sectors are beginning to regain momentum, supported by an increased need for operational financing.

The evolution of these indicators will be crucial to assessing the pace of recovery of the Chilean economy during the second half of 2026, especially considering that bank credit constitutes one of the main engines of investment, consumption, and business activity.

How Was the Survey Conducted?

The Bank Credit Survey was conducted based on responses collected between June 18 and July 2, 2026 from executives responsible for the credit departments of banking institutions operating in Chile.

The study aims to gauge the financial sector’s perception regarding the evolution of new credit approval standards and the demand for financing each quarter, serving as a primary tool used by the Central Bank to monitor the conditions of the national credit market.
