«Pasado a Groove»: The New Chilean Podcast Focusing on Music Curation in an Algorithm-Driven Era

Every two weeks, this podcast serves as a small act of musical resistance: an hour of soul, funk, jazz, and afrolatino music carefully curated by musician and producer Ariel Pino, contrasting with the fast, automated listening experience increasingly dominated by algorithms on digital platforms.

«Pasado a Groove»: The New Chilean Podcast Focusing on Music Curation in an Algorithm-Driven Era

There’s never been an easier time to listen to music. And yet, it’s never been more challenging to find genuine surprises in it.

In an age dominated by algorithmic recommendations and rapid consumption, the new podcast Pasado a Groove emerges as a response to the sense of fatigue and repetition that many music lovers and musicians have started to notice in recent years: countless songs available, but increasingly less real discovery.

Hosted and curated by Ariel Pino—a pianist, producer, arranger, and musician deeply connected to the soul, funk, jazz, and Latin fusion scenes—the project debuts as a bi-weekly space dedicated to mindful listening, careful musical selection, and the importance of human curation in an era where much of what we hear is mediated by automated systems.

His extensive background supports this perspective: founder of Alüzinati, a project where he developed a robust proposal for jazz, soul, funk, and fusion that focuses on composition, arrangements, and musical direction, he has also been part of Ángel Parra Trío, enhancing his exploration of jazz language.

Additionally, he has been associated with Los Tetas, a key name in Chilean and Latin American funk, solidifying his ties to groove music and the rhythm culture.

“Platforms have made listening more convenient, but also more passive. Many feel that even with huge playlists, they keep rotating around the same songs, artists, and recommendations,” he notes.

The concept for the podcast specifically stems from this concern. “The current logic favors permanence, repetition, and fast consumption. Amid this, more intuitive, accidental, or emotional discovery is starting to vanish.”

In response to this situation, Pasado a Groove aims to slow down listening and refocus attention on the songs, arrangements, interpretations, and the stories behind the music. Each episode—lasting around an hour—navigates through soul, funk, R&B, jazz, and afrolatino music, combining classics, rarities, and contemporary discoveries selected from the experience of someone who has spent decades producing, arranging, and performing these genres.

The chosen platform for the launch is Mixcloud, a service recognized for allowing the legal use of complete songs and maintaining mechanisms to compensate artists and rights holders.

«If I’m going to curate music, I also want to do it in a space where creators receive something for their work. That is also part of the project’s ethics,» he explains.

Episodes are published every 15 days, targeting an audience of music enthusiasts interested in discovering music and reclaiming a more attentive and less automated relationship with it.

In times where the musical experience seems increasingly guided by invisible formulas, Pasado a Groove embraces something simpler—and perhaps rarer today—attentive listening.
