What happens in a place where time flows differently?

This question is central to «Cobija,» a documentary directed by Pamela Pequeño, which will premiere in Santiago on Thursday, October 29, at 18:45, at Centro Arte Alameda.

The film will also be screened on Friday, October 30, at the Cinema Room in Ñuñoa, at 19:00, and on Wednesday, November 4, at Sala K, at 19:30, as part of the documentary’s journey since its international debut at Cinélatino Rencontres in Toulouse, France.

Once a significant port in Bolivia along the Pacific, Cobija is now a small town on the coast of Antofagasta Region, where fishermen and residents coexist with the remnants of a past shaped by indigenous communities, migrations, earthquakes, floods, and cycles of prosperity and decline.

In this desert location, Pamela Pequeño weaves a narrative that conveys the daily lives of its inhabitants, where testimonies and landscapes illustrate a time radically different from the pace of urban life, blending reality and mystery as part of existence.

The director’s connection to Cobija began long before the film. She spent part of her childhood on these shores and returned years later to document a place intertwined with her own history: «The film is born from that exploration and the desire to document this location that shaped my imagination,» the filmmaker explains.

The film offers a journey back to the childhood place where, at times, the boundaries between reality, myth, and fantasy blur. Photographs, voices, ruins of the past, and Super 8 footage intertwine to portray a community where the relationship with the sea and death acquires a unique and profound meaning.

Following its screening at Cinélatino Rencontres in Toulouse and various festivals in Chile, the premiere in Santiago marks a new phase in the film’s journey, including one of its key milestones: its screening in Cobija itself, where it was filmed.
