In an interview with Fox News, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the financial rescue extended to President Javier Milei’s government is intended to get China out of Argentina and, next, to leverage the country’s natural resources.

According to Bessent, Milei will visit the Oval Office next Tuesday and is committed to pushing China out of Argentina, describing him as a strong U.S. ally.

In that vein, the U.S. official reiterated that the deal with Milei benefits the United States, arguing that China has imposed tighter export controls on rare earths (critical elements for the tech industry) and that Argentina is rich in those resources, as well as in uranium reserves.

Bessent said U.S. private companies are already committed to being reliable partners for Argentina in the minerals market.

Finally, the Treasury chief confirmed that the agreement with Milei implements a $20 billion swap line.
