«Please, they are robbing the store with a gun,» was the desperate message sent by an employee during a violent robbery on September 11 at the Líder Express supermarket located on Isabel Riquelme in the Maipú district.

During the attack, an employee was struck with a shotgun and had her belongings stolen. Despite this, Juan Antonio Moreno, president of the Líder Walmart Chile Union, reported that the management initially intended to keep the supermarket open.

«An employee was hit with a shotgun, her belongings were stolen, and they still wanted to continue operations. You cannot prioritize sales over the health and safety of employees,» said Moreno, who also questioned the preventive measures taken by the company.

«Why weren’t necessary measures taken earlier? Prevention cannot come after a worker has been assaulted when there is an obvious risk,» he argued.

According to Moreno, union leaders and representatives had to intervene to finally secure the closure of the establishment and dispatch the night shift.

«The minimum response to such a serious incident is to immediately protect those who are working,» insisted the leader, who called on Walmart to review its security protocols and response to violent situations «to ensure that, in the face of such serious events, the first action is to safeguard employees, not to maintain commercial operations.»
