A shocking ruling reveals that the civic-military dictatorship not only targeted political opponents but also turned its violent tactics against its own, as the Chilean State is ordered to compensate an ex-military member $40 million for moral damages following his torture and unlawful detention in 1975.

The Santiago Court of Appeals has increased the compensation amount to $110 million for S.R.M.C., a Mapuche woman who, at just 19 years old, endured torture and sexual violence by state agents during the military dictatorship in Chile.

Amnesty International warns that the foundations of human rights are being dismantled. The 2025-2026 Report documents global violations, the coordinated advance of anti-rights movements, and highlights significant debts in truth and justice for the social upheaval in Chile, alerting against pardons for convicted agents. Additionally, Rodrigo Bustos emphasizes that the cancellation of the Amnesty Law and the lifting of Valech secrecy are unresolved debts.
