This means that if the global population lived as Chileans do, we would require 2.9 Earths to support that lifestyle. "Chile has been overshooting its ecological budget before reaching mid-year for years, which is not just a statistical detail, but a warning sign that should mobilize society as a whole," warned WWF.

The Kast government confronts wetland protection, labeling the defense of ecosystems as “extreme isms,” while Minister Poduje refers to it as “madness,” and the Biobío environmental secretary approves projects in risk zones. Scientists and treaties highlight the characteristics of wetlands, their limited area (less than 2% of the country's surface and only a minimal amount protected), as well as the dangers of interference; fragile and indispensable ecosystems for life.

The Calama Guarantee Court has accepted a criminal lawsuit from the Quechua Community of Cebollar Ascotán regarding environmental damage at the 11th spring of Salar de Ascotán. Investigations are underway into the deaths of endemic fish and the Loa frog following the entry of vehicles on April 4 and 5, 2026.

Scientists are raising concerns over a drastic decline in biodiversity within the fjords of Chilean Patagonia due to the salmon farming industry and climate change. Biologist Vreni Häussermann documents a 75% reduction in dominant species over the past decade, warning that the damage remains "hidden beneath the surface." Moreover, 30% of salmon farming concessions currently operate within national parks.

A new environmental alert exposing children shook the municipality of Puchuncaví in the Valparaíso region on Wednesday, as a release of contaminant gases directly affected various educational institutions, forcing evacuations and the cancellation of classes in at least three facilities.

In terms of regulations, the government's bill extends the general timeframe for their issuance to four years from its publication. This means the issuance of regulations, initially due by 2025, is now delayed by two additional years to 2027, impacting and halting the implementation of Law 21.600, which establishes the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP).

The community of Viña del Mar, led by the Movement, has filed the largest environmental damage lawsuit in Chile's history with the Second Environmental Court of Santiago, an action poised to set a potential precedent for environmental justice in Latin America due to the severity and extent of the inflicted damage.

With the deadline approaching, the citizen campaign "It’s More Than a Penguin" calls for support until April 25 to reactivate the decree withdrawn by Kast. The scientific community has warned that "advancing and strengthening protective measures is not optional, but urgent."

The environmental organization has declared a state of alert over a project deemed "dangerous for the country," stating that "under the pretext of promoting investment and correcting processes, it generates even more uncertainty, limits acquired rights, and—most critically—sacrifices the environment and public health," warned Matías Asun, director of the NGO in Chile.
